Our immediate family first got interested in Genealogy in the fall semester of 1998. Our daughter chose to do a Family History project for her Gifted Student project at school. When she started, we didn't know much about genealogy, how to do it, what's needed for "good" genealogy, and even how to spell the word! But she did some great research, using the internet, local and regional libraries, personal interviews with living relatives and local "old-timers", mailings, cemetery searches, land records, historical museums and local history rooms. With the teacher's permission, we made this a family project, with our daughter directing the research. Within two months, she had researched and documented her ancestors back to five full generations! Most of the ancestors' information collected included Birth Date, Birth Place, Marriage Date, Marriage Place, Children from the marriage, Death Date, Death Place and burial site. We think she did a wonderful job.
As part of her project, she had to create a presentation for her project. She's an artistic child, and wanted to do something visual in addition to her computerized data. So we created it. At the Parent / Child Fun Night at school, we went to the art room. She selected a piece of light maple to draw on. She sketched out her Walnut tree, and with acrylic paints, drew the tree. Each branch divides in two as it climbs higher. It's hard to tell on this computer image, but the leafy parts above are textured and dimensional.
The original image was about 6 inches square. We scanned in the image, resized it down to 50 pixels square, and other sizes as well. When our daughter was preparing her project displays, she used it as borders around her posters, as markers to identify artifacts and ancestors, and so on. Today, we're continuing to use it throughout our web pages. It seems to fit well with our Genealogy theme, our Walnut Acres theme, and our handmade baskets theme.
